West Coast Love Affair | A Big Move to Victoria British Columbia

A few small stories to go with a big move to Victoria British Columbia.

In April 2012 I took a flight from Shanghai to Vancouver.

I took the sky train from the airport to downtown, it was 6:00am and the streets were deserted, the light was only just starting to wake up the city and for the first time in my life I saw mountains. I didn’t take a picture, my bag was heavy and packed full, there was no way to squeeze my camera out easily, but it was one scene I’ll never forget, weighed down by a backpack and a drizzle of rain, I decided to move to the west coast.

In July of 2012 I sat in a coffee shop with Brittany and Kirstie – two of my favourite photographers in Banff AB. I had a wedding cancel the week before when I was on a bus headed to Slave Lake Alberta to shoot with Brittany, and to this day it was the first and only time that has ever happened. So I found myself in Alberta with an unexpected week off in the middle of the summer. My gut instinct was to go home like planned and be responsible. Kirstie asked me what was stopping me from going west she knew I fell in love with the coast from out last meeting, and though at the time the answer was money, editing work that I should have been doing, and the giant bus ride ahead of me, I answered… well I didn’t pack a pair of jeans.

To which she replied. “That isn’t a problem, there is a 40% off sale at GAP around the corner.”

The next day in jeans so new, there was yet to be a crease in the knees, I found myself on a Greyhound bus ride back to the ocean.

This trip was the first time I went to Vancouver Island, I visited family in Nanaimo. The island was the place for me; the views, the goats on a roof, the standing rocks and giant trees. I was headed home in a few days but I was already counting down to my next venture west.

A year passed before the excuse to go west presented itself again disguised as a photography conference in Portland Oregon. I headed to Victoria British Columbia with plans (thanks to a couple I met in a surf town in remote Indonesia that sold Victoria as a place with a great music scene, unrivalled scenery and an outdoor lifestyle) to check it out as a potential place to move.

And that is the lead up to this past week, a flight over the rockie mountains, a Victoria Royals hockey game, a couple bike rides around a new city in search of a bed, an apartment, and a new favourite restaurant.

Hello Victoria, BC.

The next year will be a bit of a transitional time for me, and my wedding photography business and a second venture I am in the exciting process of starting up. I have many a weddings booked back in Ontario for this summer (2014) and will continue to book between Vancouver Island and Southern Ontario.

Going home every few months this year will make the move easier, and the marvels of Skype make business meetings possible across this vast country we call Canada.

I’m so excited to be on the best coast, wish me luck on a new adventure.
