In the remote Western Brooks Range in Alaska, the visible impact of
climate change is striking. Permafrost, the layer of soil that remains
frozen throughout the year, is thawing at an unprecedented rate and
exposing the pyrite rich bedrock to water and oxygen, what once were
healthy rivers and their tributaries are now flowing bright orange
with oxidized iron and sulphuric acid as a result.
Taylor Roades captures the profound transformations occurring by
combining a choice of vantage points both aerial, and at a natural
eye-level, the photographs narrate both the landscape scale of the
climate crisis in the region, and an individual’s observation of
their own impact. In a geographic area with very little human access
these images serve as both a visual record and a call to awareness.“Alaska’s Rusting Rivers” invites viewers to consider the
broader implications of environmental degradation in the Arctic and
the pressing need for conservation. These photos highlight the
critical importance of scientific research and monitoring in these
fragile environments, and underscores the urgent need for collective
action to address the effects of climate change.
